Packing Tips

Packing doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With the right approach and a bit of preparation, you can protect your belongings, stay organized, and make moving day far easier.

Plan Before You Pack

A successful move starts with a plan.

✔ Start early
Give yourself time, ideally 3–4 weeks for a full home, or at least 2 weeks for smaller spaces.

✔ Declutter first
Donate, sell, or discard items you no longer use. Fewer items mean fewer boxes and a faster move.

✔ Pack room by room
Focus on one space at a time to stay organized and avoid mixing items from different rooms.

Packing Supplies Checklist

Before you begin, gather everything you’ll need:

  • Sturdy boxes (small, medium, large)

  • Packing paper or bubble wrap

  • Packing tape and dispenser

  • Permanent markers

  • Labels or color-coded stickers

  • Zip-top bags for screws and small parts

Tip: Using towels, linens, and clothing as padding helps reduce waste and saves space.

Room-by-Room Packing Tips

Kitchen

  • Wrap dishes individually and pack them vertically.

  • Place heavier items on the bottom, lighter items on top.

  • Clearly label boxes FRAGILE.

Bedrooms & Closets

  • Leave clothes on hangers and group them together in wardrobe boxes or garment bags.

  • Use drawers to transport soft items like clothing or linens.

Living Areas

  • Remove batteries from electronics.

  • Take photos of cable setups before unplugging TVs and devices.

  • Store remotes and cords in labeled bags taped to the item.

Furniture

  • Disassemble large pieces when possible.

  • Keep screws and hardware in labeled bags taped securely to the furniture.

Labeling & Organization

Good labeling saves hours of frustration later.

  • Label every box with its destination room and contents.

  • Use color-coding for faster unloading.

  • Avoid overpacking—boxes should be heavy enough to be sturdy but still easy to lift.

Pack an Essentials Box

Keep one box or bag with items you’ll need right away:

  • Toiletries and medications

  • A change of clothes

  • Phone chargers

  • Snacks and water

  • Toilet paper and basic cleaning supplies

This box should travel with you, not on the moving truck.

Final Packing Tips

  • Stop buying groceries about a week before moving day.

  • Keep walkways clear as packing progresses.

  • Stack boxes with heavier ones on the bottom.

  • Clearly mark anything fragile or high-value.
