Frequently Asked Moving Questions
Ferguson Moving & Storage has been helping Canadians move since 1916. Our goal is to make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible. Below are answers to some common questions we hear.
How Do I Choose The Right Moving Company?
Choose a moving company with a verified business address, proper licensing, and insurance coverage. This will protect you from inexperienced movers and potential scams. It’s also important to check reviews from past customers.
How Much Does A Move Cost?
Moving costs vary based on factors like distance, access, and move size. Most moving companies charge by the hour. If your move takes longer than expected, the final price will increase. Ferguson offers a guaranteed fixed-price quote, regardless of how long the move takes.
When Is The Best Time To Move?
The best time to move is typically mid-month during the fall or winter. These times are less busy for moving companies, giving you greater flexibility to secure your desired moving date. Planning early gives you more control over dates and options.
When Should I Contact A Moving Company?
You should contact a moving company as early as possible, ideally at least 4 weeks notice before your desired move date. This gives you the best chance to secure your preferred schedule.
Does One Tip Movers?
Tipping movers is not required. Like with many services, a tip is greatly appreciated and is a kind gesture for a job well done. Leaving a 5-star review is also a great way to show your movers they’re appreciated.
Do You Charge Extra For Moving Speciality Items Like Pianos?
Ferguson does not charge extra for moving pianos or other speciality items. These are included as part of your fixed-price moving quotes.
What Happens If It Rains, Snows Or The Weather Is Bad?
Ferguson will honour its moving commitments regardless of weather. If your move occurs on a day where the weather is acting up, your Ferguson moving team will take precautions to protect floors and carpeting from excess dirt and soil.
Are Moving Costs Tax Deductible?
In Canada, some moving costs may be tax deductible if you moved at least 40 km closer to a new job or school. To qualify, you’ll need to keep your receipts and claim the expenses when filing your taxes. We recommend checking with an accountant to see if your move qualifies.
How Can I Pack My Glassware And Other Fragile Items For Moving?
Wrap glassware and other fragile items individually and pack them in a sturdy container with a lid. Place heavier items on the bottom and fill any gaps with crushed packing paper. Seal the container with tape and label it “Fragile.” Many people choose to have household belongings, especially fragile items, professionally packed by movers. Ferguson offers packing and unpacking services with your move.
Are There Hazardous Goods Or Other Items I Cannot Bring During A Move?
Yes, Ferguson cannot move hazardous goods, perishable food, and food stored in glass containers. Hazardous items include, but are not limited to, anything flammable, corrosive, or explosive.
Where Can I Get Moving Boxes, And Does Ferguson Provide Them?
Yes, moving boxes and packing supplies are available to order through Ferguson. Complimentary wardrobe boxes and mattress protection bags are provided as part of your move.
