Moving in your 20s vs Moving in your 50s

At some point in our lives, we all have to move out of our parents’ place and start a life of our own. From there, the possibilities are endless and you could end up anywhere. You may find yourself moving across the country with friends, or just next door to a relative’s place. Moving to a new home can be a very exciting thing, no matter what age you are at. However, your moving experience may be different depending on what stage you are at in life. Let’s examine some of the differences between moving in your 20s versus moving in your 50s.

Moving in your 20s

Whether you have grown up in Vancouver and are just moving out, or if you are already thinking of getting married and starting a family, your 20s are a time of new beginnings and starting out. If you are moving out of your parents’ place for the first time, you will probably experience more freedom, resulting in this being a time of self-discovery and learning how to be more independent. Since you are just starting out, you probably don’t have too much of your own furniture to move. Maybe a few mix and match pieces from Ikea and Craigslist, but you probably don’t have enough to fill a whole house like your parents. For this reason, when you are moving you won’t need to orchestrate a huge move, maybe just a small truck and some moving boxes in your car.

Foregoing professional movers?

With all the changes going on in your life, it is also important to learn how to manage your finances, which is why a lot of younger people might choose to carry out a do-it-yourself move, instead of going with a professional moving company. For your first move, foregoing professional movers may be okay, but it will probably make you realize how great using professional movers would be! Paying friends with pizzas and beers to move your childhood bedroom set through a tiny door just ain’t the same as having pros take care of it all for you. That’s alright though, because your 20s are all about learning and figuring out for yourself what works for you.

Moving in your 50s

Contrary to moving in your 20s, or generally just younger in life, in your 50s you might be more focused on finding your peaceful place and reducing overhead. You are probably thinking of retirement, and trying to save for it. This may be a good time to think about downsizing your home, especially if your kids are grown up and moving out. Downsizing can especially be a good idea if you are trying to save for retirement, as you can sell your house to acquire its equity and put that towards your retirement savings. The process of moving at this point in your life will most likely be very different from when you were younger. When you are young, you just don’t have as much stuff as you will after going through life and having kids. You will probably have many more items that are fragile and need special care moving, like paintings and special pieces of furniture that are difficult to move. A lot of your moving experience will probably be trying to get rid of things, or trying to reorganize a lot of your belongings. It may be a much more tedious process, especially if you are downsizing, and you will probably need a lot more professional help moving! You may even want to consider getting a storage locker for things you have accumulated over the years that don’t fit into your new place, but you can’t let go of just yet. At this point in your life, you most likely want a professional moving company, as you have been through those experiences where you tried to save on moving costs by going with a cheap company or moving yourself, and ended up frustrated.

Hiring a Professional Moving Company

A professional moving company in Vancouver can make all the difference in your move, and take a lot of the pressure off you. Not only that our bodies in our 50s just aren’t what they were in our 20s! Regardless of age, knowing how to plan your move is essential. Make sure you plan out everything in advance, and don’t leave packing to the last minute. Also remember to enjoy the exciting change of moving to a new place, no matter how old you are!
