Recycling a mattress before your move
When you are moving in Vancouver, you will most likely find belongings that you no longer need and don’t want to put into storage. If you are moving to a new house, your new start may feel more complete with a new bed, so your next step will be figuring out what to do with your old mattress.
Throwing away mattresses is prohibited in any Metro Vancouver waste facility, but luckily, there are quite a few other options of where you old mattress can go. The most popular option currently available is to bring your mattress to a place that will recycle your mattress. Almost all the materials in mattresses are recyclable, and can be turned into new steel, foam, wood, plastic, and cotton products.
3 options of where to bring your used mattress:
You might not be able to bring your mattress to the dump as garbage, but you can pay to recycle it there. By paying $15 per item, you can bring up to up to a maximum of 8 items to the landfill or 4 to the transfer station. Especially if you are already bringing other things to the dump, this can be a very convenient way to recycle a mattress before your Vancouver move.
Another option is to go through a private mattress recycling company, like mattressrecycling.ca. They are the largest mattress recycling company in Western Canada, and have very competitive rates; they charge $12.50 per mattress for the average customer, or $11 for a commercial customer. They also strongly pushed for the mattress recycling bylaw in order to take pressure off Greater Vancouver’s growing landfills. They aim to repurpose the materials and give them “a new life.” To recycle your mattress with mattressrecycling.ca, drop it off at 8275 Sherbrooke Street in Vancouver anytime between 8am and 5pm Monday to Friday, or 10am to 3pm Saturday and Sunday.
Want to help others? Donate a mattress
If you are buying a new mattress when you move in Vancouver, another option is to donate your mattress to your local mattress store. Sleep Country has a program where they will pick up your old mattress for just $10 when they deliver your new mattress. They donate these mattresses to families in need, and those that can not be donated to charity are recycled.
What condition does your mattress have to be in?
Most companies request that mattresses come dry and at least relatively clean, with no mould. However, no mattress recycling company will accept mattresses with bugs. If you happen to have a mattress that has bed bugs, the landfill or transfer station will accept it for the same $15 recycling fee, as long as it is tightly sealed in a plastic mattress bag or plastic sheeting and labeled “bed bugs”.
